Downtown (east-southeast 1) is a neighbourhood of New Westminster, in Metro Vancouver. At the 2021 Census of Canada it had a population of 3,759 living in private households. 45.5% of residents identified as members of a racialized (visible minority) group, against 54.5% across Metro Vancouver as a whole; the largest single group was Chinese at 9.1%. 52.0% were Caucasian (not a visible minority, excluding Indigenous identity), and 2.6% reported Indigenous identity. Immigrants made up 36.8% of the population, compared with 41.8% citywide. Median household income before tax was $79,000 in 2020, compared with $90,000 for Metro Vancouver. 53.1% of households rented rather than owned. The neighbourhood covers 0.48 km², giving a population density of 7,867 people per square kilometre (Metro Vancouver averages about 879).
